In spite of air pollution monitoring and curbs on nearby industrial activity India’s famed monument to love, the Taj Mahal, is still turning yellow, a parliamentary committee has found according to Indian newspaper reports 15 May 2007. In a bid to preserve the Taj, the Supreme Court a decade ago ordered the closure or relocation of thousands of smoke-spewing iron foundries, brick kilns and glass-making units near the massive tomb. The magnificent white-marbled, 17th-century Taj Mahal was built by emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved queen, Mumtaz Mahal, who died while giving birth to their 14th child.
